Exxon claims spill damage limited, gov. doubful

LAUREL, Mont. (AP) ? Authorities struggled Sunday to gauge the environmental and crop damage from tens of thousands of gallons of oil that spilled into the legendary Yellowstone River, as Montana's governor criticized Exxon Mobil for downplaying the possible scope of the disaster.

A break in a company pipeline near Laurel fouled miles of riverbank and forced municipalities and irrigation districts to close intakes across eastern Montana.

Exxon Mobil brought in more cleanup workers to mop up crude at three sites along the flooded river that were coated with thick globs of crude. Yet there was no clear word on how far the damage extended along a scenic river famous for its fishing and vital to farmers who depend on its water for their crops.

The uncertainty frustrated riverfront property owners such as Linda Corbin, who worried that severe damage would be revealed as the flooding Yellowstone recedes in coming weeks. The stench of spilled crude was obvious in Corbin's backyard ? a reminder of the potential problems lurking beneath the surface of the nearby river.

"The smell has been enough to gag a maggot," said Corbin, 64. "I just hope it doesn't come too far because I'm on a well, and I won't appreciate having to shower in Exxon oil."

Environmental Protection Agency spokeswoman Sonya Pennock said its staff had spotted oil at least 40 miles downstream. There were other reports of oil as far as 100 miles away, near the town of

Hysham.

After Exxon Mobil Pipeline Co. president Gary Pruessing said flyovers had shown most of the damage was limited to a 10-mile stretch of river, Gov. Brian Schweitzer dismissed the claim as premature.

The Democratic governor said Exxon Mobil needed to get more personnel to inspect the situation close-up. He also slammed Pruessing's statement to reporters that no injured wildlife had been found.

"For somebody to say at this early stage that there's no damage to wildlife, that's pretty silly," Schweitzer said. "The Yellowstone River is important to us. We've got to have a physical inspection of that river in small boats ? and soon."

Exxon estimated that up to 1,000 barrels, or 42,000 gallons, spilled Saturday before the flow from the damaged pipeline was stopped. An EPA representative said only a small fraction of the spilled oil was likely to be recovered.

State officials earlier reported a 25-mile long slick headed downstream toward the Yellowstone's confluence with the Missouri River, just across the Montana border in North Dakota. Authorities had no further reports on that slick, and Pruessing said the oil appeared to be evaporating and dissipating as the Yellowstone carries it downstream.

Pruessing also said that the 12-inch pipeline had been temporarily shut down in May because of concerns over the rising waters on the Yellowstone. He said the company decided to restart the line after examining its safety record and deciding the risk was low.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, which oversees pipelines, last year issued a warning letter to Exxon Mobil that cited seven safety violations along the ruptured Silvertip pipeline. Two of the warnings faulted the company for its emergency response and pipeline corrosion training.

Transportation department spokeswoman Patricia Klinger said the company has since responded to the warnings and the case was closed.

The company and government officials have speculated that high waters in recent weeks may have scoured the river bottom and exposed the pipeline to debris that could have damaged the pipe. Eastern Montana received record rainfall in the last month and also has a huge snowpack in the mountains that is melting, which has resulted in widespread flooding.

"We are very curious about what may have happened at the bottom of the river. We don't have that yet," Pruessing said.

Crews were putting absorbent material along short stretches of the river in Billings and near Laurel, but no attempts were made at capturing oil farther out. In some areas, oil flowed underneath booms.

EPA on-scene coordinator Steve Way said fast flows along the flooding river were spreading the oil over a large area, making it harder to capture. But Way said that also could reduce damage to wildlife and cropland along the river.

Property owners said they could not wait long for Exxon to clean up, particularly in agricultural areas where crops and grazing pastures were at risk. The Yellowstone River also is popular among fishermen, though areas further upriver from the spill are more heavily trafficked.

Billings-area goat rancher Alexis Bonogofsky said the flooding Yellowstone brought the oil into her summer pastures ? pollution that she was afraid would kill the grass needed to feed her animals.

"My place is covered with oil," she said. "I would like a list that says: 'This is what's in crude oil.'"

The 20-year-old pipeline was last inspected in 2009 using a robotic device that travels through the line looking for corrosion, dents or other problems, Pruessing said. Tests to determine the pipeline's depth were taken in December, and at the time, the line appeared to be 5 to 8 feet below the riverbed, he said.

"It was completely in line with all regulatory requirements," he said.

Workers first became aware of a problem with the pipeline when pressure readings dropped early Saturday. Pruessing said workers began shutting down the line within six minutes, although company officials declined to say how long that process took.

The spill was small compared to other oil-related disasters, such as the 11 million gallons leaked by the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989. But officials said the pristine nature of the Yellowstone, along with its turbulent waters and riverside communities, complicated their cleanup efforts and attempts to assess the damage.

"I just don't want to write music that's throwaway. Ever since I was a kid I've written poetry and songs to make people thing. I've always wanted to save the world in my own little way."

The 23-year-old star believes her desire to help people through her music comes from her father, who is a social worker, and she wants people to realise she doesn't have a "sugar-coated, perfect" life.

She explained: "My dad's a social worker and I almost want to give that to the world.

"I think people are done with, 'I'm in the club, shakin' my booty', with running away from their bad day. I think they want someone who's gonna go, 'Fix up - welcome to the real world.'

"I'm fed up of people sugar-coating life for kids, making them think everything's amazing and everyone's perfect looking and artists don't get spots or diarrhoea before a show. We do. And that's what I wanna stand for.

"I want to write music that brings some light into the world."

Is Chord Overstreet Really Leaving Glee?

Gleeks may have seen the last of Sam Evans.

While Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr.,(who play Blaine and Mike on Glee, respectively) will reportedly be upgraded to full-time series regulars this fall, Chord Overstreet will not be returning.

Say it ain't so, right?

MORE: The Latest Glee Hairdo Do-Over: Chord Overstreet

Sorry, we can't.

At this time, Fox has not picked up Overstreet's option to return as a series regular, though the door will be left open for him to appear occasionally as a guest, sources tell Deadline.com. The network did not immediately return E! News' request for comment, but the heartthrobby actor-singer himself shed some light on the situation:

"Well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh," he tweeted Friday.

Meanwhile, that's not the only New Direction Glee may be taking soon.

News of Overstreet's ousting comes on the heels of Ryan Murphy's recent announcement to Ryan Seacrest that many of the musical show's main characters will graduate by the end of season three (which could mean no more Rachel, Finn and Quinn, to name just a few).

But all is intact for now, at least. The heart of the cast, including Overstreet, is currently on tour in Ireland.

Maria Shriver Files for Divorce

Maria Shriver Files for Divorce | Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver

Maria Shriver is moving on.

California's former first lady filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, a source confirms, two months after the actor's public admission that he fathered a child with the couple's longtime housekeeper.

Citing irreconcilable differences, Shriver is seeking shared custody of their minor children, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13. The couple also have two daughters, Katherine, 21 and Christina, 19. Shriver is also seeking spousal support from Schwarzenegger and that he pay her attorney fees.

Schwarzenegger's rep Adam Mendelsohn had no comment on the filing.

According to a source, one of the reasons Shriver had confronted housekeeper Mildred Baena was because it became more and more apparent over the years that Baena's son, Joseph, 13, bore a striking resemblance to Schwarzenegger.

"While Maria may not have been as angry at Mildred as she was at Arnold, her instinct would be to protect her family," a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. "Whatever she did in the aftermath was about taking care of her kids, trying to shield them and trying to minimize the repercussions."

Shriver, 55, most recently attended the Special Olympics in Athens, Greece, accompanied by her four children.

It remains to be seen what sort of relationship Schwarzenegger, 63, plans to have with Joseph, although a source says the actor has been providing for the boy for many years.

In early May, the couple announced their split as they contemplated the state of their 25-year marriage.

"At this time, we are living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship," the couple said in a statement at the time. "We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives."

Courtney Love at London Fashion Week.

Courtney Love just can't kick her latest addiction ? the handmade design site Etsy.

The discombobulated diva has a jones for expensive handmade items but has some trouble paying for them.

Love, who uses the handle "cherryforeverreturns" left a characteristically garbled note on her profile page warning vendors that her "checks are on a wierd [sic] sahcedule [sic] so bear with? plus my paypal account has had wierd stuff happen eg salaries and theft, so im very persnickity [sic] about it, but if I really like it, youll get paid."

The sometime singer has a bad history Etsy.

Love recently had to fork over $430,000 after she was sued for defamation by designer Dawn Simoranghir.

She had accused the designer, who sold clothing on Etsy of being an "a**wipe nasty lying hosebag thief," and "drug-pushing prostitute with a history of assault and battery."

Still, Love just can't keep away.

"My cpa hates the word 'etsy,' she declared on her buyer profile. "but theres vendors on here i adore nd i always discover new inspiring stuff."

Triple-digit temperatures drive crowds to the blue water and ocean breezes for heat relief

ANTA MONICA - With crowds flocking to the beaches Saturday to escape triple-digit temperatures in the San Fernando Valley and other inland communities, business was better than usual for Tamboura Baptiste.

As swimsuit-clad children dashed toward the water and beachgoers showered on the sand just off the Santa Monica Pier, the street musician from Winnetka treated them to the live strains of Bach and Chopin from his weathered violin.

"This is the biggest crowd I've seen," said Baptiste, a classically trained violinist. "It means there are a little more artists to compete with on the pier, but this is the X-factor spot."

Indeed, masses of people hit the coast this weekend, with a heat wave slamming Southern California at the start of the three-day holiday weekend. Temperatures hovered around 100 degrees in many inland areas, even reaching 112 in the Antelope Valley on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. In Santa Monica, however, the mercury stayed at a far more pleasing 72.

Lifeguards estimated some 150,000 people showed up Saturday to Santa Monica's beaches.

For Baptiste, who also performs at the Canoga Park Farmers' Market, it was a chance to show off 15 years of training without being drowned out by the more raucous artists or jostled by the masses on the

pier.

"The trick with the violin is to find the right spot," Baptiste said. "It's kind of a softer, more delicate instrument, so if you find a spot that's not in the midst of everything else, then it's more appreciated."

Finding a relatively quiet spot became harder though, when the crowds grew and the sun struggled to burn through the marine layer.

Even though it was overcast, the water was 70 degrees, having just warmed up in the last week, said Capt. Dennis Morales of the L.A. County Fire Department Lifeguards.

"You can't ask for better water temperatures than that," Morales said.

But the warmer temperatures also bring stingrays close to shore to nestle in the sand. The rays could pose a danger to unsuspecting swimmers or splashers, said Morales, who suggested that those taking a dip go slowly, shuffle their feet and kick up some sand first to scare them away.

Water critters were nowhere near 3-year-old Noah Noblit's mind though, as he laughed in delight, splashing in the waves in his T-shirt and shorts on his first visit to a California beach.

"He wasn't supposed to get wet," his father, Dave, said as he smiled with resignation.

The Noblits, from Colorado Springs, were visiting family in Burbank and hoping to catch a fireworks show on July 4 at the Starlight Bowl. The show would be a treat since fireworks have been banned in Colorado due to wildfires, Dave Noblit said.

Just sitting in the sand under a shady umbrella was nice enough for Lancaster resident Diny Rombouts, who had only read 10 pages of her book and had given up to people watch instead.

The 70-year-old had gotten on a crowded bus and made the trip from the Antelope Valley to escape the heat.

"It's nice to come from the desert," she said. "It's nice to cool off like this."

Forecasters predict the heat wave will peak on July Fourth, followed by cooler temperatures at midweek.
